22 de setembro - Experiments in imagining education otherwise at the end of the world as we know it

Sharon Stein

Decolonial critiques suggest that even as we seek to prepare young people to face intensifying social and ecological crises, our educational systems are rooted in the same modern/colonial paradigm that created those crises in the first place. In this talk I consider the intellectual, affective, and relational dimensions of why it is so difficult to imagine education outside of this paradigm, even as the unsustainability and violence of our existing system becomes increasingly evident. Drawing on the work of my collective, Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures, I also offer some examples of pedagogical experiments that seek to go beyond the continuity of "business as usual" and imagine education "otherwise". Rather than prescribe a single path forward, I emphasize the importance of facing today's systemic crises in ways that attend to and seek to be taught by the complexities, challenges, and contradictions of educational efforts to enact social change.
